It Can Be Done

The "it" that can be done? Skinny jeans on a plus size woman. See?

I won this pair of Z Cavaricci skinny jeans (quite some time ago) from a Torrid give-away over on Curvy Girl Chic. They are super low rise, which brings out the best of my own personal muffin top. To camouflage it, I paired the skinnies with a long button-down from Lane Bryant. I like the button down because it has a really nice shape - an empire seam right around the bust and flattering darts in the back.

A lot of women ask me questions about skinny jeans: can plus size women wear them? Why would someone even want to? What to wear with them? Aside from my outfit today, here are my thoughts on skinny jeans.

1. Yes, plus size women can wear skinny jeans. There are no hard and fast rules as to which particular plus size body types can wear them - you'll have to get yourself to the store and try 'em on to see if you can pull them off.

2. Why would someone want to wear skinny jeans? Lots of tops, especially those made for plus size Bombshells, are cut with more volume - think surplice tops, wraps, and other bohemian-style looks. When you have more fabric on the upper half of your body, anchoring the top with a fitted jean looks more balanced and proportional than wide- or bootcut jeans.

3. As for what to wear with skinny jeans, I like them with tops that fall mid-thigh (a little shorter if you're petite). I'm also a fan of tucking them into boots - I know that particular trend comes and goes, but it's a classic in my book. Skinny jeans work well with lots of layers, too: a longer tee + a chunky cardigan sweater or vest + a scarf. Here are some other ideas:
