I received a really great question from Bombshell reader, Hanna.  She emailed:

Hey, love your blog and style...  I work as a lighting technician in the broadcasting/tv/film industry, which isn't exactly a desk job, I work hard with mostly men, but one thing I struggle with is still having a feminine style while wearing something that I can work in.  So any advice for the plus size girls that don't have a desk job or maybe just out volunteering for the day and want to be stylish...

In college, I majored in Theater (a surprisingly useful degree, even if you don't wind up working in the industry!) and spent a semester crawling around in the catwalks above a stage at the University of MN, adjusting lights and filters.  Clothes had to be practical, functional and not get in the way of work.  That meant:
  • No dresses
  • Nothing low-cut or low-rise
  • Flat shoes with a rubber sole
  • No dangly accessories that could snag on equipment
If you have a non-desk job with a dress code similar to this, here's how I would play up your feminine side while staying work appropriate.

Stretchy Tops that Cinch Your Waist
In an active job, it's important that your clothes move with you.  But that doesn't have to translate into boring tee shirts or oversized cotton tunics.  Choose stretchy fabrics with details that accent your waist - this will highlight your Bombshell curves.

The Knot Front Stripe Top from eShakti creates a curvy, feminine silhouette at the waist while calling attention to your pretty face - thanks to the plunging neckline, which features a built-in cami for extra coverage.

Peplum is still a big trend this season, and it works really well on plus size figures.  I like the Mirror Print Peplum Top from City Chic because it features wide straps that will accommodate an everyday bra - and the neckline is open but not too bare.

A fitted top pairs well with loose-fitting pants, like the Knit Waist Capri from Maurices.  I think the drawstrings at the end of the capris are a cute detail, too.  I, often, dislike pants that have a tie at the waist - so I usually just tuck the strings into the top of the waistband.  Does anyone else do that, too?

Tops with Built-in Details
If it's a challenge to accessorize your outfits - it won't work to have long necklaces getting stuck on machinery or a wristful of bracelets snagging on equipment - then wear tops that create the illusion of accessories.

The Betty Bib Top from Sealed with a Kiss Designs is not only comfortable - seriously, their shirts are so soft - but it's adorable.  I love the polka dot inset!

I think embroidery is such a pretty, summery way to infuse a top with visual interest.  I like this one from eShakti because the gathers right under the bust help define curves.

Flowing tops work best with fitted pants - and in my opinion, the best plus size denim is still being created by Lane Bryant.  I'm a fan of the Straight Leg Jeans with T3 Technology because the fabric isn't stiff - it moves with you.  And the higher waist ensures that bending over won't reveal anything extra!
